PASADENA, Calif. (AP) - ABC is launching its own entry into the crowded market of singing competition shows, adapting a format that was successful in Israel.
The network's entertainment president, Paul Lee, said Friday that "Rising Star" will debut in June. Its format is heavily dependent on instant feedback from viewers who use an app to vote up or down on contestants.
Lee said the show reminds him of a combination between a singing competition and "The Gong Show."
Viewers have plenty of singing shows to choose from, between "American Idol," ''The Voice" and "The X-Factor."
