The Romantics, One Night at John Ascuaga’s Nugget

Sparks/Reno, Nev. – With a string of catchy, memorable tunes, the Romantics helped define “power pop rock” of the 1980s. See the Romantics on Saturday, January 31, in the Celebrity Showroom at John Ascuaga's Nugget.

Emerging from Detroit in the early 1980s as a rocking-pop quartet, the Romantics penned a string of tunes full of joyful affirmation, epitomized by the chanted "Hey!...uh-huh!" intro to the remarkable "That's What I Like About You.” While they admittedly took much of their simple thunder from the British Invasion, the band's primary influence was the high energy excitement of the late 1960s Detroit scene. The MC5, the Stooges, Bob Seger and The Last Heard, The Detroit Wheels, The Rationals, SRC, The Underdogs, The Up … The Romantics took the essence of this scene - sincerity, irony, spontaneity, volume - and translated it to suit their own modern experience. Their image was innate; they naturally favored short hair and shorter songs and happened on the infamous red leather suits by chance.

The band reached its commercial peak in 1983-1984 with In Heat, a platinum album bearing two top ten singles: "Talking In Your Sleep" and "One In A Million." Now in their fourth decade of performing, the Romantics still bring the energy fans have come to expect.

The Romantics play one night, Saturday, January 31, in the Celebrity Showroom at John Ascuaga's Nugget. Show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are just $25 and are available by calling (800) 648-1177 or (775) 356-3300 or by visiting Dinner and show packages are available. “Do the Nugget Tonight
