"Congratulations to Senate Republican Leader Michael Roberson, Ben Kieckhefer, Patricia Farley, and Becky Harris on their primary victories. I look forward to working with Senator Roberson as we move towards victory in November. A Republican majority in the state senate would allow us to best build upon the progress our state has made and continue to improve our economy," said Governor Brian Sandoval.
LAS VEGAS (AP) - State Sen. Ben Kieckhefer withstood a challenge from the right and won the Nevada Republican primary in District 16.
The freshman lawmaker who served as assistant minority floor leader during the 2013 legislative session was targeted by the conservative wing of the state GOP for supporting the continuation of taxes that were supposed to end.
He also drew Republican fire for standing with Minority Leader Michael Roberson in backing a proposed tax increase on mining as an alternative to a business tax measure pushed by the teachers union.
Kieckhefer was challenged by Gary Schmidt, a frequent but unsuccessful candidate who portrayed the incumbent as a political insider.
Kieckhefer will face Democrat Michael Kelley and Independent American Party candidate John H. Everhart in November.
