RENO, NV - Many families consider pets to be part of their family and want to take them along on holiday trips, but traveling with pets is not always easy. Animals sometimes get scared in the car, or can get very excited and that's when the unexpected happens. Jumping, barking, or motion sickness doesn't make for a very pleasant trip, but there are some things you can do to make traveling with your pet easier.
Tierra Bonaldi is the American Pet Products Association Spokesperson. Bonaldi says, "driving with a pet in the car can be dangerous if the pet is not properly restrained. In fact, some states are considering requiring laws to make sure people use pet restraints."
Travel Safely With Your Pets
To make car rides more comfortable and safe for your pet, and your family, seat your pet securely in the car, either with a harness, or barrier. Allowing your pet to roam freely in the car can be dangerous for the pet and distracting for the driver. For smaller pets, a bucket seat keeps them in place where they can look out and see the world go by.
For pets with anxiety or motion sickness, an all natural calming pill can do they trick. Bonaldi recommends bringing a favorite toy for comfort, and having plenty of food and water handy. Be sure your pet is wearing identification tags or has a microchip in case he runs away or gets lost.
Bonaldi also urges pet owners to keep their pet's vaccinations up to date, and take medical records with you. "There are so many innovative products out there that make travel easier for pets and pet owners. More people are traveling with animals because we consider our pets part of the family, so we want to be able to take them with us, especially during the holidays."
Other helpful tips include making frequent stops, allowing pets time to exercise and relieve themselves. Never leave your pet in the car unattended, and be careful with open windows as pets may jump out at the wrong time, or get stuck in them.
