It may be healthier to stay indoors, but that's a tough-sell at the Boys & Girls Club where kids are accustomed to enjoying the outdoors each day.
The poor air quality is also making a difference at the "Wild Island Family Adventure Park" in Sparks where the refreshing water and hot summer heat would typically make the last couple of days a great time to experience the facility.
But the smoky skies forced groups like the Boys and Girls Club of Truckee Meadows to cancel their field trips there.
"Kids don't like to have things changed at the last minute," says Mike Wurm, the Chief Protection Officer of the Boys and Girls Club of the Truckee Meadows. "They like to have a routine and structure, so we've been dealing with that."
The last few days have been challenging for the Club. Smoky skies are forcing the staff to ditch the playground and keep all activities indoors. And some of the kids say they're getting restless.
"It limits the places where we can go to have fun like the movies, the carnival, we can't even go to the rodeo fair," says Albert with the Boys and Girls Club.
"It's kinda boring," says Jaime, who attends the Club. "It's like we're not getting our exercise. All we do is play pool or watch TV and play ping-pong."
To pass the time and kill some energy, kids are hitting the weights or running on the treadmill at the gym, but sometimes even that isn't enough and the urge to play outdoor activities inside takes over.
Every morning the staff at the Boys & Girls club checks in with the Air Quality Management Division to see if going outside is even an option.
Wednesday's skies warranted a Stage Two Air Pollution Alert, meaning everyone is advised to stay indoors.
"We have the garage door shut so they can't go outside," says Joshua Kimbell a staff member. "We gotta stop the trips to Paradise Park and keep everything indoors until the air quality improves."
In the meantime, the nearly 600 kids who visit the club each day will have to make due while the staff searches for ways to keep them entertained.
it's a little bit more of a challenge for our staff, but everyone is anxious to get outside...we're not quite at the cabin fever level yet, but we're working on it."
While outdoor activities at the Family Adventure Park may have been canceled, some field trips are still allowed.
But those are only to other indoor places like movie theaters and bowling alleys.
