RENO, Nev. (KOLO) Reno's Andrew Berreyesa made state history this week, becoming the first Nevada wrestler to ever win the national title at the Junior Greco-Roman Nationals in Fargo, North Dakota.
"I'd visualized it so many times in my head," admitted Berreyesa. "But it felt better actually; it was better than I had imagined it in my head."
The Reno high school graduate went a perfect 7-0 at Nationals on his way into the history books.
"I would have been okay I guess with just another placement here, but to win it? It was my last shot this year; my senior season," added Berreyesa. "So it really made this high school career pretty awesome for me."
He went 43-1 during his senior season, earning All-American honors for the seventh time in his career. Berreyesa had a 197-12 overall record with the Huskies.
He has already signed to wrestle in college at Cornell University, where he plans to study agriculture science.
