RENO, Nev. (KOLO) University of Nevada seniors Mark Nowaczewski and Grant Fennell have been named to the Perfect Game Mountain West preseason team. The Wolf Pack, under the direction of third-year head coach T.J. Bruce, open the season with a three-game series at UC Irvine, Feb. 16-18.
A right-handed pitcher from Sparks, Nev., Nowaczewski made 15 starts in the weekend rotation for the Pack last season. He posted a 6-6 record with a 4.89 ERA tossing 99.1 innings. Nowaczewski was a first-team All-MW selection in his junior season. His 4-1 complete game victory over intrastate rival UNLV clinched Nevada’s first Governor’s Series win.
Fennell, who plays multiple positions for the Pack, earned the honor as a third baseman. The San Diego product led the team with a .328 batting average and a .405 on base percentage. His .456 slugging percentage, 34 runs scored, 24 RBI and 13 doubles were second best on the team. He was third on the team with 59 hits and four with 82 total bases. As a junior he earned second-team All-MW honors as a utility player.
Perfect Game picked the Pack to place fourth behind New Mexico, San Diego State and Fresno State. Nevada was fourth in the league a year ago.
