RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office is warning people of a scam where someone calls and says they are from the sheriff’s office and the person has “law enforcement issues” which have to be taken care of through payments.
They ask that payment be made through cash cards or prepaid credit cards or other methods, the sheriff’s office said. They will often use the names of real sheriff’s office personnel.
The sheriff’s office says it does not ask for payment over the telephone or negotiate payments in lieu of arrest. It says people need to call the appropriate law enforcement agency before making any payments.
Anyone who was a victim of this kind of scam should call the sheriff’s office at 775-328-2001 option 7.
