RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - The Washoe County School District is registering kindergartners for the 2017-18 school year, and parents of students who will start kindergarten are urged to start the registration process now. Kindergartners will be tested at their schools from August 7-11, and kindergarten classes begin Monday, August 14, 2017.

“We all look forward to welcoming our newest students to school,” said Kacey Edgington, WCSD kindergarten coordinator. “Our online registration system is ready, and we encourage our parents to use it to begin the registration process. Getting ready to attend kindergarten is an important part of assuring that our young students begin their academic careers in a positive way.”

Any child who will be five years old on or before Sept. 30, 2017 may enroll in kindergarten for the upcoming school year. After beginning the registration process online, each parent must visit the child’s school with the student's original birth certificate, immunization records, and a utility bill that shows the parent's or guardian's name and address as proof of residence for the zoned school.

If you’re not sure which school your child should attend, visit the district website to determine the name and address of your zoned school.

Three WCSD elementary schools will institute Multi-Track Year-Round schedules during the 2017-18 school year due to overcrowding. Students at Alice Smith, Double Diamond, and Spanish Springs elementary schools will observe the schedule, which is available here. For more information about the MTYR calendar, click here.

Marvin Picollo School and Natchez Elementary School are undergoing revitalization and will observe different schedules during this school year. Details about those schedules are available here.

Kindergartners who will attend Incline Elementary School will participate in testing from August 21-25 and will begin classes Monday, August 28.

Nancy Gomes Elementary School is also undergoing revitalization, and the schedule will be changed for the coming year. A meeting will be held at Cold Springs Middle School Monday, July 31 at 5:30 p.m. for families that would like more information about these changes.

All students in grades 1 through 12 who do not attend schools listed above will be welcomed back to school on Monday, August 7.
