RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - Whether they're looking at books, coloring, or doing puzzles, it's a busy day for kindergartners in Michelle Lynch's Kindergarten class at Marvin Moss Elementary School. There's plenty to do and there are plenty of classmates.
There are more than 4,600 kindergartners enrolled in the Washoe County School District. Enrollment has remained steady over the last few years, despite the fact that the Washoe County School District made all kindergarten classes free and all-day in every elementary school.
"Starting in the school year of 2015 - 2016, Washoe County School District made full day kindergarten a priority and all students were provided with full-day kindergarten," says Kacey Edgington, Kindergarten Coordinator for WCSD.
Next year, because of overcrowding, WCSD will add four elementary schools to the multi-track year-round schedule. Those schools are Brown, Double Diamond, Alice Smith, and Spanish Springs. The extra tracks mean more juggling of students and schedules at those schools. It's part of why WCSD officials are asking parents to help them out by registering their kindergartners as early as possible.
"Why it is important that they get their kindergartner registered out there is we ask them to fill out a multi-track preference form... a family preference form. So as soon as they get registered, we would ask that they fill that form out so we can have input on their track preference." says Troy Parks, a WCSD Area Superintendent.
School officials say that while kindergarten is optional, it plays a big role in a child's interpersonal development.
"In kindergarten, we're focused on social emotional learning... we're focused on friendship skills," says Edgington. She says getting your child registered now gives their teacher more time to prepare.
"Our teachers can get their materials ready, they can provide a spot for the child, they know how many kids are going to be in their classroom," she says. "We're excited for your children to join our Washoe County family.
