RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - It is that time again, time to file your taxes. Tax filing season begins Monday, January 29.
Tax expert James Leonard with Sabatini and Associates says the sooner you can file your taxes, the sooner you can get your refund. He says another reason to file early is to avoid falling victim to a scam.
If you wait too long, a criminal could use your information to file, and Leonard says that if that happens, it could take a lot of work for you to straighten things out.
"If you file first and get in before fraudulent preparers, you do not have to worry about them accessing your information." said Leonard.
Scammers may try to call you and pretend they are from the IRS, asking for private information. Leonard says the people who tend to fall victim to this scam most often are the elderly.
Remember the IRS will never ask you for private information, such as access to your bank accounts over the phone.
The IRS states on its website that people who file their taxes on paper are 20 times more likely to make mistakes than those who file electronically. If you file electronically you can also get your refund faster.
The deadline to file for this year is April 17.
