Sparks' Williams a candidate for national player of the year award

STORRS, Conn. (KOLO) Former Reed high school all-american Gabby Wiliams has been added to the Wade Trophy watch list.

The UConn junior is one of 35 players in the country up for the award, which honors the women's basketball player of the year.

Williams is averaging 12.5 points, 8.3 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 2.7 steals per game. She leads the Huskies in assists (119) and steals (61).

Williams recorded a triple-double in their win against East Carolina this season; just the fifth triple-double in school history.

The top-ranked Huskies are a perfect 22-0 this season, and have extended their own NCAA record to 97 wins in a row.

Four finalists for the Wade Trophy will be announced in March. The winner will be revealed during the women's basketball Final Four in Dallas.
