SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. (KOLO)-- The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office has released information about a skier killed at Heavenly Mountain Resort.

49-year-old Lewis Carrillo III of Santa Rosa was a beginner being taught by a friend on a beginner trail December 27, 2017. He went over a retaining wall and down an embankment 30 to 40 feet, and sustained blunt force trauma with a liver laceration.

Early indications of a head injury were unfounded.

Heavenly Mountain Ski Patrol responded and tried to help, the resort said in a statement. The skier was pronounced dead by Tahoe Valley Fire Department and the El Dorado County Coroner.

“Heavenly Mountain Resort, Heavenly Ski Patrol, and the entire Vail Resorts family extend our deepest sympathy and support to our guest’s family and friends,” Mike Goar, vice president of mountain division and chief operating officer of Heavenly Mountain Resort, said in a statement.
