Shoppers support local on Small Business Saturday

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) -- Many shoppers went out of their way to avoid the big box stores and make purchases at smaller retailers.

Small Business Saturday is something that's been going on for 8 years now on the Saturday after Black Friday.

Several locally-owned shops offered deals on items throughout the stores. Many shoppers were able to get a head start on their Christmas shopping.

Millions of people throughout the country shopped small. For one local customer, it's the little things that small businesses offer, that make a big difference.

"You get so many unique things when you shop small businesses. You get the personal touch; it's just fantastic," said Diane Gutierrez, customer.

American Express launched Small Business Saturday. The credit card company says last year Small Business owners generated $15.4 billion.
