RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - A Thanksgiving Day fire displaced 18 people in Reno. Eight were displaced because of the original fire and 10 more when their furnaces and utilities were deemed unsafe.

The fire happened at Colony Inn at 1000 Harvard Way. It started in a common area that includes a kitchen and heating and air conditioning, but the cause of the fire remains under investigation, Reno Fire Department Battalion Chief Mike Pilcher said.

One resident unsuccessfully tried to put out the fire with an extinguisher. Although the flames were knocked down quickly, crews remained on scene, making sure the fire had not spread in the floor or walls, Pilcher said.

Reno Fire Chaplain Stephen Arvin and the American Red Cross worked to help those displaced, including getting them a place to at a nearby motel, food and medication.
