RENO, Nev. (KOLO) -- With Mother's day around the corner, the VA Medical Hospital hosted a special event for expecting veteran mothers.
About a dozen attended the VA’s Hospital Baby shower for local veterans welcoming new children into their families this year.
"To have the woman come out and connect with each other and see that the VA is trying to do something and celebrate a certain milestones with them," said Francie Mahoney, Women’s Veterans Program Manager.
It's the first time the VA hospitals nationwide held this event. While there were gifts, education also played a key role.
"I learned so much, I found out I can use a wick program and they have a lot of information here on top of the classic baby shower games," said Mellissa Frey, Veteran.
This wasn't your typical baby shower, the event also increasing awareness of VA's maternity care services.
The veteran mothers also learned infant CPR and the different shots babies should have. The VA says the goal is to make this an annual Mother's Day weekend celebration.
