Suspect in 2017 Reno killing in custody in Washoe jail

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - A person of interest in a downtown Reno murder has been brought back to Reno and charged with open murder.

Police were called about 2AM August 31, 2017 to an alley at 1st Street between Arlington and West Streets. 26-year-old Vidal Smith was found shot to death.

Police say Smith had a confrontation with somebody before the shooting, and they did not believe there was any danger to the public.

October 5, police announced that as they continued to piece the case together, a person of interest was in custody on a federal parole violation charge in Tempe, Arizona. 27-year-old Dontay Sevier has since been extradited back to Nevada, and February 15, 2018, he was booked into the Washoe County jail on an open murder charge.
