March 8 fundraiser helps rescue children from modern-day slavery

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - The Silver Legacy Resort & Casino will host a gala fundraiser for Operation Underground Railroad (O.U.R.), an organization with the mission of ending sex trafficking one child at a time in multiple countries around the world.

“O.U.R. works on 8% of donations, their budget to run rescue operations. The big cost is the after-care,” said James Kroshus, volunteer event organizer. “Many of the kids are trafficked by their parents and they can’t go home, so they’re dependent on O.U.R.”

The gala will include dinner and entertainment and will take place in the Silver Legacy’s Grande Exposition Hall Thursday, March 8, 2018 at 6:00 pm. The program will feature guest speaker Tim Ballard, Founder and CEO of Operation Underground Railroad, Brian Jenkins, who will present a Chautauqua portraying Abraham Lincoln, and FARJA, a family singing group that will perform pop, spiritual, and rhythm & blues songs. Ticket price to attend this black-tie (optional) affair is $105 and may be purchased on Eventbrite. All proceeds go directly to OUR, Inc., a 501c3 non-profit.

O.U.R. says about 2 million children are exploited every year in the global commercial sex trade (UNICEF). Through coordinated rescue and recovery planning, O.U.R. has rescued 990 victims and assisted in the arrest of 443 traffickers around the world in the past four years. Donations will help them eradicate this horrific human rights violation and be a continued force of hope and freedom.

Operation Underground Railroad was founded December 2013 as a way to help many suffering children who fall outside the jurisdiction of the United States government. Working with local law enforcement, it leads rescue operations abroad and works with vetted after-care organizations that have a comprehensive process involving justice for the perpetrators and rehabilitation and recovery for the survivors.
