CARSON CITY, Nev. (KOLO) -- "It's a big deal. It's a $4 million project, which is a big project for Carson City and of course, any time you construct in the heart of downtown, it affects a lot of people," says Dan Stucky, City Engineer for Carson City.
Crews are starting work on the Downtown Curry Streetscape Project, bringing a new look to the street, which could use a lift.
"New sidewalks, wider sidewalks, we're replacing the gas streetlights with more energy-efficient LED lights," says Stucky. There will also be a lot of new landscaping. The project will also give the city a chance to upgrade aging sewer, water, and storm drain infrastructure.
"About a third to a half of the project costs is to upgrade those utilities. Utilities only have so long of a useful life and so we're pushing 70 to 80 years on some of these utilities," says Stucky.
Once the work is completed in the fall, downtown Curry Street should look a lot like downtown Carson Street, just a block away; it was revitalized about two years ago.
"People really like what was done there, so they're excited to see having the same thing on Curry Street," says Stucky.
But some aren't so excited about all the road work that will be taking place over the next few months, meaning some road closures and fewer parking spaces as crews take over the area.
"That's going to be difficult on these businesses," says Larry Ratcliffe, who came to downtown Carson to go shopping. "When you think about these business people not being able to have access to their customers."
But Michael Robbins, who owns Hanifin's Arts and Antiques, says this is construction he wants to put up with. His store has two entrances: one on Curry Street and one on Carson Street. And after Carson Street was improved, he noticed a dramatic increase in foot traffic in the area and sales.
"It's going to be a painful summer, but in the long run, it's going to be great for everybody," says Robbins. "I have a lease that goes for twenty more years and I hope to be doing this for twenty more years."
