RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - For more than five decades, Candlestick Park stood as the ultimate hub for bay area sports in northern California, but just like any professional athlete, the stadium's time in the limelight would fade. Yet, the memory of that iconic structure lives on in the minds of anyone who's attended a game in "The Stick", including Steve Towell, who is opening a sports lounge in downtown Reno under the same name.
"(With) The Stick no longer being there, we felt it was nice to do a little tribute to that," he says.
When you walk into The Stick, you'll be able to recognize some of the most iconic moments in sports displayed on the walls, along with a special nod to bay area teams like the 49ers, Giants and Warriors. At any given time, you can catch just about every sporting event that's happening throughout the day.
"We'll have football Sunday ticket, we'll have the MLB package, NBA and NHL, and then any big UFC events that are coming," says Towell.
But don't expect to see your standard pub fare. The Stick will offer a more upscale menu with items like steak, seafood and pasta. They'll also serve some familiar sports bar favorites with a twist.
"We wanted to be able to separate ourselves from that stereotype of pub fare, sports bar food, and really offer high quality," says Towell.
The Stick will be a non-smoking and non-gaming lounge. Towell says he wants to keep the focus on the food and the sports, while creating a fun atmosphere for all ages.
"We want to be able to bring in the high energy, the excitement factor, and (make it) family friendly. Just get everybody excited to be in one place," says Towell.
The Stick is located at 95 North Sierra Street and will be open 7 days a week. The grand opening will be held March 5th.
