Important USPS deadlines for Christmas delivery

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) -- The Reno Processing and Distribution Center is handling millions of pieces of mail this holiday season.

The Postal Service is projecting a more than 10% increase in total mail volume this holiday season, including a total of 850 million packages.

This year is expected to be busier than last because more people are shopping online. In fact, over the last five years, USPS package volume has increased by more than 2 billion (from 3.8 billion to 5.8 billion).

This holiday season, more than 15 billion total pieces of mail and packages will be delivered between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve.

Here are the important deadlines for Christmas delivery:
Dec. 11: Priority Mail Destined for Overseas Military
Dec. 14: Domestic Ground Delivery
Dec. 19: First- Class Cards and Letters
Dec 20: Priority Mail
Dec 22: Express Mail

Local postal offices will open weekends for the next two weeks. Sparks Vista will be open on Saturday, December 9th and 16th from 10 am to 3 pm. The Reno Main post office will be open on Sunday, December 10th and 17th from 10 am to 3 pm.
