Douglas County Sheriff's Office warns of phone scam

MINDEN, Nev. (KOLO) - The Douglas County Sheriff's Office is warning the community of a phone scam in which the caller claims they are a member of the Sheriff's Office and attempts to get a credit card number to satisfy an overdue fine.

The caller uses names from the Sheriff's Office and the calls may appear to be from a local number. The caller falsely states you have missed a court date, or there was a warrant recently issued and you now owe a fine.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office says they will never call to notify you that you owe money on a warrant or fine.

You are encouraged to hang up on these calls and never give out personal information over the phone.
