RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - The city of Reno has issued a statement about plans to disinter graves from a cemetery just west of the University of Nevada, Reno, as the owner plans to develop the land.

Some of the graves are for people who founded the city of Reno. The Hillside Cemetery created in the 1800s.

"We can only imagine the hurt and frustration family and friends of the deceased may feel upon learning that gravesites are to be relocated,” said Deanna Gescheider, Reno director of communications and community engagement in a statement. “The Reno City Council is paying close attention to the community feedback regarding the Hillside Cemetery restoration; however, the city of Reno has no authority over the disinterment process.”

The city urged people who want to give feedback to call the owners at 877-247-4662 or go to hillsidecemeteryrestoration.com, where it said disinterment is scheduled to take place after Sept. 30.
