CARSON CITY, Nev (KOLO) -- Carson City is looking to show its artistic side as well as promote its outdoor recreation.
If you have traveled through Carson City, you have probably seen the black bike racks. In a few months, get ready to be surprised.
"It's an ambitious project and we are really excited," said Mark Salinas, Director of Arts & Culture, Carson City Visitors Bureau
The Carson City Visitors Bureau and Muscle Powered are searching for Northern Nevada artists to design 30 new bike racks throughout the city.
"This is new territory for Carson City," said Salinas.
The two organizations are looking for artists to build unique bike racks.
"These bike racks that we are looking for, we hope they are going to be funky and functional," said Salinas.
He says the organizations only want artist to submit their qualifications, not designs.
Each bikes rack costs $1,500, $500 for the artist and $1,000 for the labor and material. The artist will be paired with a welder.
Salinas says this idea is to promote a more bikeable Carson City.
"These will become the first public sculptures in Carson City. So there are some bragging rights for artist to get on board," said Salinas.
While the city's goal is to build 30 new bike racks, the first hurdle is to build five by June, so it is ready for the second annual Epic Rides Carson City off-road mountain bike race.
"We want these designs to be really a cross section of the creativity that Northern Nevadans have," said Salinas.
