CARSON CITY, Nev. (KOLO) Four firefighters from the Carson City Fire Department are home safely after spending 14 days fighting wildfires in Southern California.
"It feels good to be home," Captain Chris Mason says. "We're definitely happy to be back."
Mason says the four got the call while they were out testing another firefighter for his probationary test. Ryan Bailey says even though it interrupted his testing, he was ready to help out.
"I don't think anyone really expects to go to a wildfire in December," Bailey says. "But in SoCal it's kind of a year-round deal down there."
Mason and Bailey both say the fire was unlike anything they had ever seen and the fire's unruly behavior continued during the two weeks they were there.
"The first night we did structure protections and the fire really got into the neighborhoods and it was unlike anything we had ever seen before," Mason says.
The team says the people in the areas affected were very grateful and continually thanked them for their help and service.
"If we stopped for just a minute there were people that wanted to give you cookies and, you know, ask if we can help you with anything," Mason says," And we're here thinking, we're here to help you, not you help us."
