CANstruction kicks off at Meadowood Mall

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) An event to benefit the Food Bank of Northern Nevada started Wednesday. For 2018, organizers expect to raise eight thousand dollars, providing meals to every dollar donated.

For the 15th year, schools, companies and architects get together to raise money and food through building massive structures made of cans.

"There are about 23 thousand cans if you count all the food in the structures, and it goes out to the community, people who are facing hunger every day" said Jocelyn Lantrip.

As well as giving back to the community, participants will be able to practice teamwork, design and planning. "I've always wanted to build a spaceship" said John Garrett, one of the event's attendees.

"Between the sponsorship and the voting for the best structure, we are raising about eight thousand dollars, and for every dollar that is donated to us we can provide three meals, just about 24 thousand meals and it all stays local."

The awards will be announced at Meadowood Mall Thursday and the winners will be submitted to the national level of CANstruction. Reno CANstructors will be able to compete for local the "People's Choice" award. Each vote is one dollar and all the proceeds will be directed to Northern Nevada Food Bank. People's Choice voting will take place at the guest services desk at Meadowood Mall and online.
