Step into Spring program underway to help kids who need shoes

CARSON CITY, Nev. (KOLO) - More than 300 kids in Carson City Schools will be smiling a little brighter this week, because 11 schools are going to be providing them with brand new shoes.

"They've come to school with the whole bottom falling off. It's a good thing to give those shoes to kids that truly need it," said Lynette Putzer from Fritsch Elementary School.

For the 14th year the "Step into Spring" program is providing shoes to needy students in transition. Those are students who lack fixed and regular nighttime residences.

Peggy Sweetland says the smiles are only possible because of the generosity of the community. "Currently I have enrolled in the program 470 students. It's so heart-warming to get the smiles and the giggles that kids do." she said.

This year, Big 5 provided discounted shoes. They will be distributed through the week.
