Washoe County is one of the safest counties in the United States for a dog or cat to be lost, and is one of the leaders in the no-kill movement for implementing lifesaving programs. Info

As Northern Nevada’s original No-Kill shelter, the focus of the SPCA remains on rescue and re-homing along with and increasing commitment to rehabilitating dogs and cats who need a little extra help. Many animals arrive at the SPCA scared and frightened because of neglect or abuse. These animals are individuals who deserve a second chance which is why we use behaviorists and trainers to work with them to help them become adoptable. Info

The SPCA is an independent agency that receives no government funding or funding from national organizations such as the ASPCA. We depend entirely on local community support to fund our programs. We are truly a homegrown neighborhood animal welfare agency directly funded by YOU! Donate

The SPCA of Northern Nevada has a low-cost spay/neuter program which allows low-income families to participate in reducing pet overpopulation. We also coordinate a website called “Spay Nevada” which has information and a hotline for Nevada residents to learn about spay/neuter programs available statewide. This program educates the public on the benefits of altering your companion and encourages people to be a part of saving lives. Info

The SPCA of Northern Nevada has a low-cost vaccination and microchip clinic every weekend. This helps to ensure that every animal in our community has a chance at a healthy life and to be returned to their loving family if lost. Did you know that only 22 percent of lost dogs who entered animal shelters were reunited with their families? However, the return-to-owner rate for microchipped dogs was over 52 percent! Less than 2 percent of lost cats who entered animal shelters were reunited with their families. The return-to-owner rate for microchipped cats was dramatically higher at over 38 percent. Microchipping substantially increases the likelihood of a pet returning home by offering secure, reliable, unique and permanent identification. Prevent heartbreak – get your animal chipped! Info

The SPCA of Northern Nevada rescues animals who have been rejected by many other agencies and provides that animal with necessary rehabilitation and a second chance to find a forever home. Once they come to our shelter we make a lifetime commitment to each and every one. Every animal who enters the SPCA is considered family forever. If circumstances bring them back to us, we are committed to caring for them and finding them a new home. Info

By volunteering at the SPCA of Northern Nevada, you can personally make a difference in the lives of homeless animals every day. Volunteers are the backbone of any nonprofit. Without volunteers, the SPCA could not function. Volunteers help in many different ways – from walking dogs, socializing cats, helping customers, assisting in administration, and working events – it’s all critical and necessary to keep the shelter functioning for the sake of the dogs and cats.
