RENO, NV - Walmart is helping to combat hunger in Northern Nevada with a $50,000 donation the local food bank. The gift comes from the company's "Associates Choice" program. Employees across the state got to vote on who would get the money, choosing from a variety of charities in Northern and Southern Nevada. Ballots cast online made the Food Bank of Northern Nevada the winner.
The organization says the retail giant has been there to support them as need has grown in the community. Essentially our organization distributed 15-and-a-half million meals last year," says Food Bank President Cherie Jamason, "and a big chunk of the produce of that comes through Walmart distribution center. All across the board they've been big supporters of the food bank and the work that we do."
Jamason says with a stagnant employment market in Northern Nevada, the number of people coming to them for help is not increasing.
Instead, she says, as the people they are helping deplete their reserves, the amount of help they need is growing.
