Veterans Helping Veterans

Sparks, NV - A fledgling non-profit is focusing on giving back to those who have served our country. The Veteran Training Center helps veterans get back on their feet and take charge of their lives.

“Most people just don’t understand,” says John Perry. Perry served in Vietnam in the 1970s. Today, he’s homeless. His entire life is stuffed into the back of a van.

“Usually I get mad, because I didn’t do anything wrong. You go through terrible pain cycles when you’re tired, and depressed and you can’t do anything and you’re down for days at a time,” says Perry.

Perry left the army with an honorable discharge but now suffers post-traumatic stress disorder.

According to the National Institute Of Mental Health, “7.7 million American adults age 18 and older, or about 3.5 percent of people in this age group in a given year, have PTSD.”

John is one of many local veterans who come to the Veteran Training Center in Sparks. There he’s able to pick up necessities like warmer boots.

At 10 a.m. this Saturday the center is holding a stand down for veterans and their families. Those eligible can pick up furniture, towels and even toys for their families.
The non-profit also trains veterans on how to find jobs after they serve abroad.

Founder Philip Foster is a veteran. He says he’s sad to see fellow veterans who are homeless, adding, “That’s why I started this facility here. I go to the VA hospital to get treated and I run into these young veterans who say they need help.”

Foster says the non-profit has donated more than 1000 pieces of furniture since May. They’re hoping to give a lot more away this Saturday.
