Veterans Guest House gets an addition to add capacity. Ribbon cutting at 2 PM

From the Reno Veterans' Guest House: (ATLANTA) March 31, 2012 – The Veterans' Guest House in Reno, Nevada won $250,000 and took first place honors in the inaugural Aprons in Action contest, The Home Depot Foundation’s year-long Facebook voting program. The Veterans Guest House won $25,000 in the February round of Aprons in Action and went on to compete against 10 other monthly winners in the March finale. Utah State Veterans Home in Salt Lake City took second place honors and won $150,000, while LifeBUILDERS of Detroit secured third place honors and received $100,000.

During the Aprons in Action Contest, which began in April 2011, The Home Depot Foundation’s Facebook page served as a platform for 44 non-profit organizations to earn funds through Facebook votes and to generate further awareness of their community efforts. All participating organizations received at least $5,000 from The Home Depot Foundation; monthly winners received $25,000.

By participating in Aprons in Action, each nonprofit heightened its visibility both locally and nationally. As a result, the nonprofits have been able to establish new community partnerships; have experienced an increase in volunteers lining up to help; and have seen exponential growth in Facebook fans and followers.

“Aprons in Action is our $1 million effort to raise awareness of non-profit causes in over 40 different communities throughout the United States during a 12-month period,” said Kelly Caffarelli, president of The Home Depot Foundation. “It has been rewarding to watch local communities rally together to support these important organizations, both by voting for them in Aprons in Action and by inquiring about future ways to be involved in their efforts.”

“We are so pleased and thankful for the support that we received from our community during the Aprons in Action finale and would like to thank The Home Depot Foundation for letting us be part of a contest that helped raise $275,000 for our organization in two months,” said Noreen Leary, Chief Operating Officer for the Veterans Guest House in Reno. “We plan to use the $275,000 to add additional housing capacity at our facility to provide a ‘home away from home’ for veterans receiving care at nearby medical facilities.”

Team Depot, the company’s associate-led volunteer force, has already been very involved with Veterans Guest House. Home Depot associates have installed doors, kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanities, toilets and a number of appliances for the nonprofit’s newly remodeled facility.

Across the country, The Home Depot Associates give back to their communities by volunteering their time and talents with local nonprofit organizations. The Aprons in Action Program recognizes these successful partnerships and gives each of the featured nonprofits the opportunity to do additional work with Team Depot volunteers to better their communities.
