Sixth Grader Gets New Bike After Getting Robbed

SPARKS, Nev. -- A 12-year-old boy got the surprise of his life at school Wednesday, when just last Thursday, he was robbed and beaten up by two teens. The community came together to make this sixth-grader's day.

Wednesday was one of the best days in Montana Abolina's life, but it wasn't all smiles last week when he was confronted by Julian Padilla, 19, and a juvenile who knocked him down and stole his prized possession--his bike--in an area he goes to play often.

"What was scary, I almost died that night," Abolinas said.

It's a mother's worst nightmare to get a phone call saying her child is hurt.

"I didn't know what to think, I just looked at my friend and thought, 'oh my god' we have to go'," Melissa Abolinas, Montana's mother said. "It scared me to death and I don't know why they would do such a thing."

Although scared, Montana still found the courage to do the right thing.

"Wouldn't you do the same thing, run away from them?" He asked.

To show him there is more to the community than the bad, the Kiwanis Club came together to give him the one thing he loved the most--a brand new bike.

"Unfortunately, bad things happen in our community...but to be able to show that out of bad things we continue to get through them and good things come to us," Kelly Keane, Jerry Whitehead principal said.

For Montana Abolinas, the new bike is a sign of hope.

"Thank you for giving me a new bike, I appreciate it and I was pretty upset I lost my bike, but now I'm happy with this one," he said.

Even after traumatic experience, teachers say Montana still comes to school every day with a smile on his face and a positive attitude, knowing that very little can separate a boy from his bike.
