Shop With the Sheriff Kicks Off 11th Year Helping Needy Children

RENO, NV -- We all remember what it was like to get presents from Santa, but some children might not have anything to open this year. That's why volunteers from the Washoe County Sheriff's office took 200 local children in need on a store-wide shopping spree at Walmart Tuesday night.

"If kids have to wonder whether or not Santa is going to visit their home, that's a lot of pressure, so we're helping Santa," Mike Haley, Sheriff of Washoe County, said.

Santa's helpers changed uniforms as they helped local children in need check things off their Christmas lists, making sure they know that Santa didn't forget them.

"We remember the wonder of Christmas, the spirit of Christmas, remember thinking abut Santa Claus and whether he'd come to our house and whether we've been good or bad," said Haley. "We want to make sure every kid gets to experience that."

All seven-year-old Boston Rogers wanted was a Monster High doll, but worried more about what to get for her family.

"My dad can't work in the snow, but I think we need to get him snow boots," she said.

Each child paired up with a deputy and got to spend up to $200 on any toys or clothes. Anything more than that came straight out of the deputies' own pockets.

"We think it just builds good character and a foundation," Haley added. "I never never tire of watching kids just enjoy, just like we did, that first present you ever get is just wondrous."

At the end of the night every child also received a $50 gift card to buy groceries for their families. This was all part of the 11th Annual Shop with the Sheriff program.
