Salvation Army Short on Donations for Needy Families

CARSON CITY, Nev.-The Salvation Army of Carson City will be providing the makings for a warm holiday meal and toys for children this Christmas to 250 families.

Most of the registered families have more than one child, usually three or more, which means over 700 toys need to be collected to ensure every child has something under their Christmas tree this year.

“Toys for 8-12 year olds are very down,” said Lieutenant Mark Cyr, Carson City Salvation Army Corps Officer. “I don’t know the exact numbers as we have not picked up all of our toy barrels yet but I can tell that we will not have enough to go around for this age group. They are the hardest to buy for.”

Gift cards for this age group are always useful as well as crafting and jewelry making supplies for girls and things like skateboards and sporting equipment are always great for the boys. MP3 players are great for either gender as well.

Money raised in The Salvation Army’s red kettles is also down. “In comparison to this time last year, we are down $8,000,” Lieutenant Cyr said. “We need to keep to our fundraising goals as our year round services depend on moneys raised in the kettle.”

Lieutenant Cyr fears that with a decrease in funding, a decrease in services may be looming. “It won’t happen right away, but later on in the year when our kettle income runs out, we may have to re-evaluate services if we don’t make our projected funds this Christmas.”

The organization is asking the public to please stop by those familiar red kettles located in front of popular retailers like Wal Mart and Raley’s and make a contribution. “Even a little bit can go a long way,” Lieutenant Cyr said. “Loose change and small bills can make a world of difference to The Salvation Army and the families we help. We couldn’t do what we do without generous support from the public and we need the help now more than ever.”
