RENO, Nev (April 16, 2012) – Anne Mueller, an art student at Reed High School, is one of nine national finalists competing for up to $30,000 in cash prizes as part of “The Art of Dairy” competition sponsored by Lucerne Dairy. The theme for the seventh annual contest is “Red, White, and Moo.”

Student artists from across the country were challenged to illustrate what American ingenuity means to them by incorporating Lucerne dairy products into their artwork. Anne’s project — entitled “Amazing
Americows” — depicted famous American heroes, inventors, athletes, and authors — with a clever, dairy-related twist. In an essay that accompanied her artwork, Anne wrote, “May we do for future generations what the great minds and ideas of the past have done for us --- shine, inspire and lead!”

“I knew the theme was American ingenuity,” said Anne, “so I thought of the great American heroes that have always inspired me.”

In February, judges reviewed thousands of entries and announced the names of the nine finalists. Each student artist was then asked to transfer his or her artwork onto a life sized fiberglass cow. They are
competing for the contest’s grand prize: $20,000 for the school’s art department, plus $5,000 each for the student and his or her art teacher. Nationwide online and mobile voting will determine winners of the grand prize, first prize, and honorable achievement awards. The six remaining finalists will each receive a $500 US Savings Bond.

Mueller, a junior at Reed High School, said if she wins, she will use her prize money to attend college, where she hopes to study fine arts. “Art has always been a part of my life. My goal is to illustrate a
children’s book,” she said.

“Anne is a very talented and motivated artist,” said Suzie Scholl, Mueller’s art teacher. “The project really turned out even better than I could’ve imagined, and we hope the community will help Anne realize her dream of winning this competition.”

The public can vote via mobile phone at their local participating Safeway store, online at www.ArtofDairy.com, and on the Safeway Facebook page (www.facebook.com/Safeway). Public voting begins April 16 and concludes May 15. The name of the winner will be announced in early June. Mueller’s art project is currently on display at Reed High School.
