Paralympic Veteran Bikes Across Country for Charity

FALLON, NV -- A Paralympic veteran is biking 54-hundred miles across the country for a good cause and he stopped in Nevada Monday to share his journey.

Rob Jones is an accomplished athlete, a combat veteran, but first and foremost a Marine. After taking home a bronze medal in the Paralympics for rowing in 2012, he decided to take on another challenge. He is not one to ever take the easy route.

"As long as you work hard at what you want to do, eventually you are going to get there even though it might take a while," said Jones.

This journey has already taken him six months. It's part of his cycling trek across the country to raise money for those who helped him when he needed it most.

"I had to focus on the road and fell down a lot," he said.

That's among many other challenges he's faced in his life. What makes his journey unique is he's peddling from Maine to San Diego with prosthetic legs. Jones lost both his limbs in Afghanistan in 2010.

"You just have to decide that you want to enjoy your life as much as possible. You only get one of them so it's important to enjoy it."

Jones never gave up and now he's taken life in stride, making a stop in fallon today to inspire others to do the same.

"We have the tendency these days to be negative about things and the realty is his service to the country and his service to the marine corps and his service to Virginia and his service to his community and family is something that's really admirable," Admiral Andrew Lewis, Commander of the Naval Strike and Warfare Center, said.

Now, with about 900 miles left in his journey, he's remained always faithful and always loyal to his goals, determined to finish what he had started.

"Looking forward to the day where I have to go to and know I don't have to ride my bike the next day," Jones said.
