RENO, Nev. -- A new billboard in Reno encourages drivers to donate to non-profit agencies who help families in need and other organizations that benefit the community.

When you drive south on U.S. 395 (soon to be I-580) through south Reno, you can see an electronic billboard that gives brief descriptions of specific families who need help. The images also prompt people to visit a website to donate.

One image, for example, says, "The daughter is severely disabled. Dad has an inoperable brain tumor. Lets give 'em a hand. RenoCares.org."

Other featured causes include a new organization that is looking at ways to help diversify our economic base by supporting high-tech start-up companies.

The "good news" campaign was started by a university professor and entrepreneur who hopes to spread the billboard idea to Las Vegas.

The professor says our area is full of caring people who want to help others, and the billboard makes it easy for them to find out how to do that.

The professor wants to remain anonymous. Not only is he funding the campaign, he is finding and vetting the people and organization featured on the billboards. He says, "The only thing I get out of this is the same we all do when we give to those who are in need. We feel better about ourselves and our community."

The RenoCares.org website shows full stories of the people or groups the organization is trying to help.

The billboard is located just before exit 59 on southbound 395.
