RENO, Nev. -- A long-time local athlete is joining the global effort to prevent the spread of AIDS and HIV in Africa. John Leeming joined "Ride for Hope Coast to Coast," a charity which organizes cyclists with the goal of "riding towards an AIDS-free world."
Leeming is training for the organization's up-coming ride across America. On Saturday, April 20th, Leeming will take his training regiment into the public eye by doing what cyclists call 'a century' (100 miles) on a stationary bike.
The 'century,' scheduled for 6:30am to noon at Light House Coffee (Pyramid & Eagle Canyon) in Sparks, also doubles as a fundraiser and community support-building event. Anyone who donates during the event will also get free coffee.
Leeming moved to the Reno area from Las Vegas in 1975 when he joined the University of Nevada, Reno cross-country team. After college, he stayed in the area to raise his family and continued to enjoy running. About ten years ago, he started cycling and has since participated in a number of cycling events and fundraisers.
