Be A Santa To A Soldier A Success

RENO, NV - “Web of Support” is calling the “Be a Santa to a Soldier” campaign a success. KOLO 8 started collecting gift cards and Christmas cards for Nevada men and women serving in Afghanistan just after Halloween. Local residents came through again this year to help make Christmas special for the troops.

Approximately 70 cards sat on a desk in the studio, waiting for P-J Degross, with "Web of Support" to come pick them up.

For several weeks we asked our viewers to purchase Christmas cards, along with gift cards and bring them to the station or to Wells Fargo Banks.

Those cards will be headed to Afghanistan to make the holiday special for Nevada men and women serving there.

“The one unit that is the newest in Afghanistan the 485th military company, we will take care of the entire company. And whatever is left over will go to the 422nd who will be coming home soon. I will give these to the commander and he will give it out to those soldiers who he thinks should get a little extra something,” says Degross.

Degross says unlike in previous years where we've collected dvds for Nevada troops, this year the packages will be less expensive to mail, leaving more funds for more gift cards if needed.

One group of children from Morning's Little Stars Play School got real creative and designed their own Christmas card--complete with I Tunes gift card.

“I think the older ones probably understand, for the most part, the little ones, not so much. It’s a foundation we can continue to build on,” said Morningstar Helvey from the play school yesterday as the kids were using glitter and paint.

That card, the biggest in the bunch PJ says will go on top of the shipment.

“I know they know they are getting them, and I know they are excited about it,” says Degross about the companies that are receiving the cards.

PJ is confident there will still be an interest in being "A Santa to a Soldier" next year.

We'll be there to help her out.

This year its estimated “Be a Santa to a Soldier” collected more than $2,000 in gift cards for local men and women serving in Afghanistan.
