“Environmental and sustainability awareness are expanding into all levels of our community,” said Jen Huntley, president of greenUP!

The 25th annual Golden Pinecone Awards takes place Thursday, March 28 at the Peppermill Resort Spa Casino. The event features dinner, live music from the Mile High Jazz Band’s five-piece combo, the Millennium Bugs, and an add-on optional tour of Peppermill’s geothermal infrastructure.

Six winners in various categories will be honored this year. “Environmental and sustainability awareness are expanding into all levels of our community,” said Jen Huntley, president of greenUP! “We’ve reorganized the award categories to recognize the innovation and leadership happening among youth groups and in education.” Additionally, the diversity of awardees, ranging from artist/activist Erik Holland to Washoe County Commissioner Kitty Jung and Reno Oil of Las Vegas, demonstrates the breadth and depth of environmental leadership emerging across the state and in all sectors of business, agencies, and nonprofits.

Winners of the 2013 Golden Pinecone Awards for Environmental Leadership include:
Most Influential Public Figure: Kitty Jung
Youth Leadership: Celeste Tinajero, Reed High School
Best Business: Renu Oil of America, Inc.
Best Non-Profit Organization: Snowlands Network
Best Educational Program: Fayth Ross, GreenPower Northern
Most Influential Individual: Erik Holland, local artist

Additionally, greenUP! will recognize Delmo Andreozzi, City Manager of Elko, for his leadership in urban cleanup and recycling efforts. “It’s fantastic to get nominees from outside the Reno-Sparks area” said Huntley. “We wanted to recognize the efforts of environmental leaders across the state with the honorable mention.”

For 25 years, the Golden Pinecone Awards have recognized the efforts of environmental leaders in Nevada as the only exclusively environmentally focused awards ceremony in the state. The Peppermill is supporting with a generous sponsorship. Other sponsors include RTC Smart Trips, University of Nevada – Reno Academy for the Environment, University of Nevada – Reno Business Environmental Program, and Wound-Up Studio.
