More than 80 celebrity golfers begin practice rounds Tuesday at the American Century Championship at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course. The week long event attracts hundreds of spectators every year, but this year their attention may be spilt between the celebrity tournament and a PGA Tour event taking place at Montreux Golf & Country Club. For the first time in the Reno-Tahoe Open’s 12-year history the events are happening on the same week
RTO organizers say the PGA invited them to change the date of the event so that it would not conflict with any other tournaments taking place in the US at the same time. The change allowed more top level players to be a part of the event. 132 professional golfers will play at Montreux this year, competing for a total purse of $3 million.
In 2010, RTO is taking place three weeks earlier than in year's past. But organizers say this may not be a permanent change. “We're constricted by weather and the PGA total tour calendar,” says Randolph Townsend “but we're only concentrating right now on what we're doing this week and then we'll assess what goes on over the next month or so.”
Gallery tickets are still available for the Reno-Tahoe Open. You can purchase them on line or at the gate. All proceeds from this year’s event will benefit the Nevada Military Support Association. The NMSA provides a range of support services to members of the military who have fallen on hard times.
