This year's Reno Rodeo Foundation Denim Drive was the most successful yet.

"We just concluded the sixth year of our denim drive and we are just so thankful," Reno Rodeo Foundation Executive Director Marie Baxter said, "We actually had a record-setting year and we know the economy is tough, but people sure open their hearts and their checkbooks to make a difference to abused and neglected children who've been rescued from unsafe homes."

On Saturday those children and their foster families were invited to come a take advantage of all those donations at the Kids Kampus Activity Center on Longley Lane.

"It's just evident from the smiles on all the kids' faces how meaningful this is," Baxter said. "We have kids here from infant through age 18 so every size and shape and they're all just so appreciative to have new clothes to wear to school."

More than 1800 children from 13 Nevada counties were able to pick out jeans, underwear and socks. They're all in protective custody or foster care.

"It's so nice having a resource like this," foster parent Lisa Hickman said. "The kids love it, they like seeing their friends and it's llike Christmas time for them to come and get new jeans. They just have a blast."

Hickman has been a foster parent for the last five years.

"The kids were so excited about this, I didn't tell them until we were on our way here and they're jumping around in the car like they were going to Disneyland or something," Hickman said.

The foundation collects most of their donations in November and December but they're open year-round.

"This is 100% our community, every cash donation we get we use to buy additional clothing ," Baxter said. "We do these distributions twice a year but we keep a closet where social workers and people from the shelter pull clothes from every single day, so this is not just an isolated event, this happens pretty much every day."

The foundation also accepts donations all year long.
