SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Gov. Jerry Brown has signed compromise
legislation that allows school districts to preserve transportation funding after parents and advocates complained about losing school
bus services.
The governor's office announced Friday that Brown signed SB81, which was passed by lawmakers earlier this month.
The bill alters a $248 million school transportation spending cut lawmakers included in the state budget they passed last summer.
The cut was to take effect automatically at the start of the year because tax revenue was running well behind projections.
School officials say the cut would have had the greatest impact on rural districts, where students often travel long distances to get to and from schools.
The measure takes effect immediately. It allows school districts to absorb the spending cut anywhere in their overall budgets.
