LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) - A 12,000 gallon spill in Compton sent
sewage into the Los Angeles River and downstream about 15 miles to Long Beach, where health officials closed beaches as a precaution.
All beaches in Long Beach are off limits to swimmers and surfers until bacteria levels return to safe levels. The Long Beach Health
Department did not speculate when that might be.
Officials say the Saturday spill was caused by a blocked sewer line.
