SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) - A man with a genius IQ charged with killing five females has taken the stand in Orange County.
Rodney Alcala, who is representing himself in his potential death penalty trial, took the stand Tuesday after using a mirror to put a gold ball earring in his left ear.
The earring is at the center of the case involving a young girl whose mother says wore the earring before being killed in 1979.
Prosecutors say the earring was found in a jewelry pouch in a Seattle storage locker rented by Alcala. But in a bizarre twist, Alcala is expected to show jurors clips of himself wearing the earring before the girl's death in an episode of the TV show "The Dating Game."
Alcala has been sentenced to death twice for the slaying of 12-year-old Robin Samsoe, but both convictions were overturned.
