SANTA ROSA, Calif. (AP) - Sonoma County fire officials are investigating how a 16-year-old Boy Scout was recruited to help during a fire.

The teen is a Boy Scout Fire Explorer with the Glen Ellen Fire Protection District, which responded Thursday to a fire about 50 miles north of San Francisco.

Mark Aston, fire chief and director of the Sonoma County Office of Emergency Services, says the boy and another firefighter were treated for exhaustion at Sonoma Valley Hospital. Both were released.

The boy was assigned to a water tender. Aston says Boy Scouts are not allowed to be used in offensive fire activity.

Glen Ellen Fire Chief Peter Van Fleet did not respond to a call by The Associated Press Saturday seeking comment.
