RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) - Riverside County prosecutors say the mayor of the small city of San Jacinto (hah-SIN'-toh) and three other city council members have been charged with conspiracy to launder campaign money in a 155-count indictment.
District Attorney Rod Pacheco said Thursday that Councilman James Ayres wanted to avoid political contribution limits and mandatory disclosures in his campaign to win the 2006 Republican primary in the 65th Assembly District race.
Nine people, including Ayres' friends, family and business contacts, were indicted on 56 felonies and 99 misdemeanors, following an 18-month investigation and a two-month grand jury proceeding.
The defendants face from 7 to 27 years in prison if convicted on all counts.
