Beverly Hills Considers Banning Declawing Of Cats
Beverly Hills is among a growing number of cities around the state that are considering proposals that would ban the declawing of cats and other animals.

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) - Beverly Hills is among a growing number of cities around the state that are considering proposals that would ban the declawing of cats and other animals.
The city council gave initial approval to the ordinance Thursday on a 5-0 vote.
Councilman John Mirisch said declawing is "a cruel and unnecessary procedure."
California Veterinary Medical Association president Dr. Mark Nunez opposes the ordinance, saying it's a decision that should be left to the owner.
A second vote is needed for final approval.
Santa Monica and San Francisco also have given initial approval to banning declawing.
A Los Angeles City Council committee has directed the city attorney's office to draft an ordinance banning declawing for the full City Council to consider before the end of the year.
