SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (AP) - A Santa Cruz woman who had been hospitalized with swine flu has died, becoming the first fatality in the county linked to the pandemic.
Santa Cruz County's public health officer says the middle-aged woman, who died Tuesday, had underlying health problems that may have put her at risk for the flu. Her identity was not released.
The California Department of Public Health says there have been 32 swine flu-related deaths in the state and 1,945 confirmed cases.
Health officials say there will likely be more deaths from swine flu throughout the nation before this pandemic ends. They warn everyone to take commonsense precautions - such as frequent hand-washing - to prevent infection.
