SUNNYVALE, Calif. (AP) - Former eBay chief executive Meg Whitman returned to Silicon Valley Monday as candidate Whitman, where she faced a sympathetic crowd in her quest for the Republican gubernatorial nomination.

Whitman delivered her pitch at Yahoo Inc. headquarters in Sunnyvale, saying she would slash state spending, streamline regulations and work on California's schools.

But the crowd of about 150 business and community leaders seemed skeptical that even one of their own could cut through the political gridlock that dominates Sacramento.

Whitman says she's not naive and understands the challenge is daunting. She says she would use the same kind of focused approach that works in business: hire top people, many from outside California, and use the governor's veto power to strike out bad legislation.
